WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people vacation and as millions of Americans adapt to “the new normal”, here in New Jersey, the trend seems to be shorter stays away from home. In years past, summer vacationers would spend a week or more at the Jersey shore or even distance travel by air or cruise ship to their favorite destinations. Today, more families have opted for road trips and shorter 1 – 3 day excursions in order to maintain social distancing protocols and help to “flatten the curve”. But, what does this new style of vacationing mean for your pets?

Unfortunately, road trips can often be very difficult for pets. Many hotels, restaurants and even national parks and campgrounds are not ideal environments for pets. In fact, some destinations have very specific rules regarding animal companions and only allow for service dogs or require additional “pet fees.”

Beyond these issues, simply preparing for a trip with pets can be a big endeavor in itself. Remember that you’ll need extra food, water, dishes, toys and even crates / carriers (which are required by many hotels for pet guests) that can take up much needed space even in larger vehicles such as SUVs.

In most cases, day trips and road trips with pets can be tough even for experienced pet owners. So, what alternatives are there?
