The cold weather season is finally over! The warm weather brings out the energy to get outside and get active. Humans are not the only group that feels this way. Many dog breeds enjoy roaming outside in the grass and sunbathing. As always, they love to play with their human owners as well. An exciting way to bond with your dog is to get involved with a competitive dog sport. Dog sports can be a lot of fun for your dog and yourself! Our overnight dog boarding South Jersey experts describe a few fun activities to tackle with your dog.

Agility Competitions

Agility competitions are one of the most common dog competitions around. Agility is a great way for an owner to bond with their dog and lead them through a set of skillful tasks. Agility competitions have a variety of skill levels which makes them very novice-friendly. Agility competitions comprise a single obstacle course that includes different jumps, ramps, tunnels, and much more. The fastest time with the least amount of penalties wins!

Dock Diving

A dog sport that is less physical for the human but more physician for the dog could be worthwhile! Dock diving is exactly that. The goal is really simple and similar to the Olympic sport of long jumping. Dock diving is comprised of two classes that rate jumps over a body of water based on height and length. The goal is really simple. The highest and furthest jump that results in a caught chew toy wins. It is a great bonding experience between the owner and dog all while your pet gets a chance to cool off!

Scent Competitions

Unfortunately, some dogs have comprised physical abilities due to medical issues or aging. There are still fun and exciting competitions to take part in even with that being said. A popular competition for dogs with physical challenges is scent competition. Scent competitions are designed courses that have dogs look for certain odors around various environments. The environments could be indoors and outdoors where the scents could be hidden just about anywhere! This is another sport that gives the opportunity to bond with your dog without pushing their physical abilities.

Rally Competitions

Rally competitions is a competition very similar to agility competitions. Rally courses are broken down into various stations that challenge the dog’s level of obedience and their connection with the owner. Rally focuses more on the level of cognitive ability in comparison to physical ability. This can be a very fun activity to get involved in and ultimately help train your dog further!
